Tree Topping/Topping Off

Tree Topping (aka Topping Out/Topping Off)

Tree topping or topping out is a ceremony conducted at or near the end of construction of a building.  The focal point of the ceremony is a tree, typically pine or fir, temporarily placed at the one of the highest points of the building.

After mounting the tree a small ceremony or celebration is conducted, usually with a short blessing, toast, or dedication.  The meaning of the ceremony is to honor and thank the natural world for the raw materials used in the building’s construction.  It is a way to bless and wish good luck upon the building and occupants.

The roots of the tradition go back several centuries to northern Europe.  Today, tree topping ceremonies are common throughout most of Europe on residential and commercial construction.  In the US, it is most commonly done on commercial projects and on residential projects to a smaller degree.

Krueger’s Christmas Tree Farm has provided trees to several tree topping ceremonies in the Twin Cities area.  Pictured above is a tree recently provided to a family in Mahtomedi, MN, to honor and bless their newly constructed garage.

Similar trees can be provided for commercial or residential construction.  Please Contact Us at the farm for any questions about tree topping or how to order a tree for your project!
